PCC News – Purdeys Trip - 4th August

How special it was to meet up once again at Purdeys, Old Kea for our regular “Summer” Cream Tea/ Quiche. It is such an amazing little out-of-the-way spot with amazing scones. Along with feeding ourselves with lovely grub, we also managed to have some great chats and enjoy the super company of fellow photographers.

Penryn Project Meeting

Despite the tight timescales we have managed to select 15 images to represent the club and they are now being printed and will be on display during our exhibition at Penryn Fair Day. ALL entries are being shown as a digital slide show and we would like to thank everyone who took up their time to find those special parts of Penryn that other people might not find ! We hope you enjoyed taking the photos and that you like the selection.

A Message From Paul:

The committee needs your help.

There is a mild perception that it is not worth entering competitions as some of our better photographers are always winning. This is only partially true as 23 different members won a place in our 23/24 competitions.

So, what are your thoughts on how we address this? The club already does many things to help members raise their skills; workshops, guest speakers, photo outings, themed competitions, out-of-camera (no editing), fun competitions, in-club critiques, online help, asking questions, celebrating achievements etc. We REALLY do not want to introduce a tier system - we feel that does not mesh with the ethos of our club.

How can the club evolve further? Some options may be;

  • Pairing Up: Create a mentorship program where more experienced photographers can guide less experienced photographers. This might encourage skill sharing as we have a supportive community. The Penryn Project may be a great platform for this - no end competition just, hopefully, better images

  • Group Projects: Assign group projects with mixed-ability teams. This encourages collaboration and learning from one another. Again, phase two of the Penryn project when we go to shop locations etc. Another thought; a group to focus on this year's set subject with the experienced photographers sharing their planning thoughts.

  • Facebook club page: Use a space where members can share their work, ask for feedback, and discuss photography-related topics. A bit like Derek did with his model, and Paul followed up with the drone shot. If members posted their images and received constructive criticism, they might see things previously missed. Perhaps we get our thick-skinned photographers to lead the way so folk see that ‘real’ feedback is not threatening, it is simply someone's opinion (which can be wrong).

  • Handicap Points: Assign initial handicap points based on previous competition results. 1/2/3rd start -3 and c/hc start -1 as an example. or 1st = -5 down to Commended = -1 if we wanted to be harsh. Adjust these handicaps after each competition. This would be fairly easy to implement on the judge's scoresheet. Currently if asked to judge between 1 - 20 most judges score between 10 - 20. Do we request they use the whole range stating 3 is not poor, it is technically good just lacking XYZ. This would allow the above handicap to be less severe.

• Before and After comparisons: Encourage members to submit a “before” photo from when they first started and an “after” photo showing members what to look for and how the edit was accomplished. https://www.penryncameraclub.co.uk/before-and- after

  • Feedback loops: Try and capture the judge's comments then have a session the following week to critique those comments and let the photographer say their feelings on the result for their image. We have done this in the past with mixed reception.

  • What else? We have 48 brains to work on this problem so feel free to include anything missed. This is your club, and the committee is keen to learn your views. Please initially email PenrynCC@gmail.com so we have a single point of contact. Those that don’t like email please write your comments and pass them to Wendy.

Regards PCC Committee
